Introduction
The National Literacy Agency invites motivated and creative educators to join its Writing Programmes team as Part-Time Resource Leaders. This role offers the opportunity to design and lead meaningful writing workshops, activities, and sessions that nurture children’s and families’ enjoyment, confidence, and creativity in writing.
Resource Leaders play a key part in fostering a warm, supportive, and engaging learning environment, working closely with service users through interactive, hands‑on activities based on the writing process and a balanced literacy approach. The position is well‑suited to educators who value collaboration, innovation, and the shared joy of writing. Selected candidates contribute to initiatives that celebrate writing as an accessible and enriching experience for all participants, while continuing to grow professionally through ongoing training and teamwork within the Agency.
Accountability
The post-holder shall be accountable to the CEO of the National Literacy Agency (NLA) and/or his/her delegate.
Roles and Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the CEO and/or his/her delegate, the post-holder shall fulfil the following roles and responsibilities:
1. Assist in the running of the Malta Writing Programme (MWP) by providing literacy services organised by the Agency.
2. Plan and deliver writing activities, clubs, sessions and/or courses for service users using the writing process within a balanced literacy methodology.
3. Participate in all planning, on-going and evaluation meetings.
4. Create a welcoming environment for service users.
5. Establish a caring and nurturing relationship with service users.
6. Be flexible and innovative in adapting differentiated teaching methodologies within a balanced literacy approach.
7. Act as a role model for participating parents/caregivers.
8. Process each session and prepare for following sessions utilising the templates provided by the Agency.
9. Effectively make use of hands-on literacy games and activities to reach wider educational objectives.
10. Keep attendance for each session throughout the duration of the course.
11. Actively include volunteers/observers in activities.
12. Always respect and practise confidentiality.
13. Participate in the implementation of follow-up initiatives, activities and/or events where necessary.
14. Actively participate in training opportunities organised by the Agency.
15. Keep abreast of policies and research related to literacy.
16. Together with NLA team assist in programme development and review.
17. Ensure that NLA’s equal opportunities and standards are integrated into all aspects of the service.
18. Undertake first line child protection measures, reporting areas of concern to the CEO and/or his/her delegate.
19. Child protection: To have due regard for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and to follow the child protection procedures adopted by the Directorate for Educational Services.
20. Dress appropriately according to dress code policy provided by the Agency.
21. Participate in performance assessment sessions on the basis of which one’s further involvement is determined.
22. Carry out any other ancillary duties as assigned by the CEO and/or his/her delegate.
Eligibility criteria:
Applicants must at the closing date of receipt of applications be in possession of:
1. At least an MQF Level 5 Diploma (min. 60 ECTS) in Education. Preferably a recognised degree at MQF Level 6 or higher in Education OR English OR Maltese; AND
2. Successful completion of the Institute for Education programme Teaching Writing Skills in Primary and Secondary Schools (Award) OR the Malta Writing Programme Invitational Writing Institute OR the Writing Process One-week Training for Teachers or equivalent or higher; * AND
3. A minimum of 2 years teaching and/or learning support experience; AND
4. Fluency in written and spoken Maltese and English (minimum certification at MQF Level 3).
* Applicants who are not in possession of eligibility criterion 2, will only be considered if they commit to follow and successfully complete the relevant training during their first year of employment.
Experience required:
· Familiarity with the multi-sensory balanced literacy approach utilised.
· Familiarity with the application of differentiated teaching methodologies.
· Experience in the implementation of writing process methodology will be considered an asset.
· Previous experience working with parents/caregivers will also be considered an asset.
Terms and Conditions:
· The role of Resource Leader (Grade E), Writing Programmes, is part-time, with a maximum commitment of 10 hours per week.
· The working hours of Resource Leaders who deliver sessions in schools and in the community include both contact time and preparation time.
· All hours worked, including preparation time, must be recorded using a timesheet or electronic system as directed by management.
· Record of work is to be submitted as directed by management and must include a brief description of tasks completed.
· The full-time equivalent (FTE) salary of Resource Leaders (based on a 40-hour week) is €30,822 per annum (in 2026), with an FTE annual increment of €600 per annum up to an FTE maximum of €34,571. Part-time Resource Leaders are paid pro-rata, based on the number of hours worked.
· Part-time Resource Leaders benefit from performance bonus of up to 10% of the basic salary, subject to predefined performance indicators and appraisal evaluations in accordance with internal policies.
· The stated rates are all-inclusive and cover any expenses incurred by Resource Leaders.
· Willingness to be flexible to meet the demands of the role.
· Availability throughout the calendar year (not only the scholastic year).
